SPLIT AIRPORT FACTS
Split Airport was built and open on November 25, 1966, and since then the number of passengers arriving in the Split area grew year after year. The exception to the growth were 1988 due to economic crisis, 1991 when the airport was detained due to war till April 1992 & 2020 due to the pandemic of coronavirus COVID-19.
Split Airport has more than a hundred flights per day during the summer months, connected by direct flights to 60 European airlines, which links Split as the main center of Dalmatia with 108 destinations in Europe.
Over the past eight years, Split Airport has recorded an increase in the number of passengers each year, and their number has risen from 1.2 million in 2010 up to the 2019 year’s record of 2.8 million. Despite the current situation surrounding the pandemics, we are optimistic that by the end of 2021, it is expected that over 2 million passengers will fly through Split Airport.
NEW SPLIT AIRPORT TERMINAL
The surge in numbers has put a strain on the current infrastructure and capacity of Split Airport. SPLIT, the busiest of all the Croatian coastal airports, and second busiest in the country, has been experiencing severe growing pains, which reflected on our guest’s first impressions. It all changed in 2020 with the construction of the new terminal that was under construction since early 2018. The new terminal opened in late 20219. Split Airport got 35,000 square meters of the new passenger terminal, a new bus station, a new parking space with 50 buses and 900 car seats, and a new build-in pedestrian bridge. Finlay Split international airport became a 24-hour airport from the summer of 2019.
New Split Airport Terminal on Schedule for July 2019
Interestingly, the expansion was funded by the airport own means and that is not all. The distance between the Split airport and Split old town center in now covered in only 15 minutes of the pleasant ride with the motor catamaran. From June to the end of October every 1,5 hours daily, passengers from the Split airport will be able to choose a water ride to the ferry port of Split.
Ocean Sailing House homeport Marina Kastela is contacted to Split airport via short taxi car or Uber ride, but we do hope it will become one of the catamaran line stops. We will keep You posted on the progress – sign up for our Newsletter!
